Symptoms of worms in dogs

Nothing is more stressful than seeing your best friend unwell. Symptoms of worms include diarrhoea, vomiting, loss of appetite, anaemia, weight loss and in extreme cases, death.

Not only are worms bad for your dog, but the parasites that infect your pet can also cause health problems for you and your children, so prevention is definitely preferable.

How do dogs get worms?

Worms are normally picked up when your dog comes into contact with faeces or soil that contain worm eggs. These parasites survive in your dog’s intestines and live off blood or other nutrients they find inside. Both roundworms and hookworms can also be transmitted to young puppies through their mother’s milk.

The four most common types of worms in dogs are:

Roundworms: Long, white and spaghetti-like, roundworms live in your pup’s intestines. When infected, your dog may display a pot-like belly accompanied by diarrhoea.

Hookworms: Much shorter in length than roundworms, hookworms have sharp pointy mouths which they use to attach to the intestinal wall to feed on blood. Symptoms include extreme tiredness and anaemia from blood loss. In severe cases, blood loss from hookworms can be fatal.

Whipworms: Whipworms are commonly contracted by dogs who have lived in close proximity to other dogs (for instance, boarding kennels and animal shelters). Unfortunately, whipworms are difficult to diagnose. Your dog may not be symptomatic until the infection has become severe, but it’s still important to watch out for early signs of illness like diarrhoea and weight loss.

Tapeworms: Tapeworms are the most common type of worm in Australia. While there may not be severe signs of illness, signs include your dog scratching or licking their bottom, and you may spot worm segments in their faeces.

How often should you treat your dog for worms

To protect your pet and family from contagious worms, you should treat your dog with the following worming schedule:

From the age of 2-weeks, every fortnight until your pup is 12-weeks old
To continue, every month until they are 6-months old
Then, every 3 months for life depending on the product used
